Getting the DD Spanking Relationship Started After a Long Break, and Consistency Success Stories (Club Meeting - 569)

"The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing." — Walt Disney

Hello all. Welcome back to The Disciplinary Wives Club – Tribute blog.  Our weekly on-line gathering of women and men who are in, or would like to be in, a Domestic Discipline relationship of the type advocated by the former Disciplinary Wives Club (archived copy in the “Links I Like” list, below right).

I hope you all had a good week.  Mine wasn’t too bad.  We’re in that part of the transition to autumn in which it’s 50 degrees one day, 80 the next, and at our place in the mountains it feels downright wintery in the mornings.  We spent some time putting up Halloween decorations, which put us ahead of most in our neighborhood. I get the sense that hot weather has stuck around so long this year that people haven’t made the mental jump to the new season yet.

Which, of course, didn’t mean that Home Depot hadn’t already replaced all their Halloween decorations with Christmas stuff.  Seriously??

The one thing I’m feeling a little unsatisfied with is getting the Domestic Discipline aspects of our relationship started again after our lengthy injury-related hiatus.  I talked a couple of weeks ago about introducing it back in, with a short experimental session with some short canes bundled up like the switches used for a birching. It was a start, but it didn’t really go anywhere after that.

Part of the problem is a good one, in that I haven’t done a lot that was obviously punishment-worthy.  At least, nothing very serious. Although that’s a good thing for the most part, I feel like it is, in fact, a problem, because both of us really do want to get our dynamic going again, yet it seems harder to get started when there’s not some big, dramatic behavior or attitude failure to be addressed.

And, it's not like there haven't been issues around carelessness and attitude, though those are the kind of things that require self-reporting, which seems harder than it should be at a time when I really do want to get things started again. Given that it’s been almost six months since we were in anything like a real DD routine, it feels almost like starting over from scratch, with all the hesitation and embarrassment that asking for DD entailed the first time, but this time with full knowledge of what a real disciplinary spanking entails.

So, my first question for the group this week is, have you experienced a long pause in your DD relationship and, if so, how did you get things started again?  Was it simply a matter of asking for it, or did it take something more than that?

I’ve been thinking about this issue of getting started again in the context of what we’ve both said we want going forward.  We’ve talked about it several times, and in some ways it’s pretty simple: We both want her to be more in charge, more in control, more strict, more assertive, such that DD and FLR feel more like our day-to-day reality, instead of like dynamics whose presence wax and wane.

And, while it’s more about the structure of the relationship as a whole and not simply about being spanked more, I do feel like if the power shift is real it is going to express itself, at least in part, in spankings that are both more certain and more frequent.  How frequent?  I’m not really sure.  Two or three times a week seems unrealistic. But, perhaps weekly?

The easy way to get there would be by committing to a maintenance spanking routine, but neither of us seems interested in that.  For us, setting the bar lower than it has been in the past seems like the better approach.

Former commenter KOJ went through a process that seemed closer to what I envision for us. Here are some snippets from a few of his comments:

“Did spankings decline as she "trained" me? Yes, but not as much as one might imagine, because she kept setting the bar for my behavior higher and higher. Plus, she both needed to and enjoyed asserting her female authority, and nothing did so as directly and dramatically as ordering me to take down my pants.

“We didn't do maintenance, but there were times when I noticed her getting antsy and I knew she would soon be finding a (good enough) reason to put me over her knee. Sort of a gender reversal from the more typical situation of the disciplined husband needing a reset. It was her demonstrating that "I'm in charge here, and don't you forget it!

“We definitely had a set of rules, all of which she established and enforced with spanking. But she also was very much into spanking for "disrespect" and ungentlemanly conduct," and that could take almost any form. Occasionally I would be surprised by her reasoning, but usually she was spot on.

“My wife also quickly morphed from misbehaviors in her presence to any misbehavior. She would question me about my driving, my drinking, my attitude to customer service people, my respect level for female co-workers, etc., and punish me accordingly.”

For me the goal isn’t about being spanked more often, but it is about being more subject to her control and her discipline, which almost certainly would be expressed through more frequent spankings.

When we’ve talked about it, Anne seems genuinely in favor of the idea.  Maybe back when we were in the busiest phases of married life, managing kids and careers, stepping up to be the real power in the household might have felt burdensome.  But, now that we’re in a much more relaxed phase, I get the sense that she’s genuinely into the idea of being more consistently and more openly in control.

Another of our former commenters, Marisa, talked about both consistency and openness and the relationship between the two:

“It is definitely easier to be consistent in applying discipline, much like it is easier to form a habit and stick with it. I really believe discipline has to be a priority, or why do it?   One way to make it a priority is to make it a habit.

If you spank him sometimes but not others, both of you will be frustrated, and your influence on your husband’s behavior will be reduced. This isn’t easy, but much in life isn’t, and if you believe in what you are doing and want real change, there has to be a commitment to it.

But there is also the real world I live in. I know absolutely that a spanking administered as soon as possible is much more efficient than waiting. But sometimes I have to wait. We don’t have children, but family and friends are often around and, so far, we have kept private the spanking part of our life (although nobody around doubts who wears the pants in the family).

So, sometimes he goes a day or longer before paying the piper. Is that inconsistent? I don’t think so. I always deliver eventually, and he knows that. In some ideal future, I hope to open up more with close friends and I will be able to discipline on the spot when he misbehaves. Some of us will live to see the day when a wife doing that doesn’t bring gasps of horror from friends. Meanwhile, I do practice consistency best as I can and try to make it a habit.”

KOJ had a similar take on the value of openness, though in his case, it was an openness that was more or less imposed whether he liked it or not:

“It was shockingly abrupt with my wife, with no explanation. She must have been thinking about it for a long time. She had been hiding her authority over me due to concern about both of our careers. I had no idea that she wanted to display her authority, or at least not hide it. But suddenly she was making the same demands and comments in public that she did in private. I was taken aback. Eventually we talked about it. She was her matter-of-fact self. "You'll just have to accept it like you do your spankings," she said.  I came to realize that power is more powerful the more people know about it!”

There is something that I find incredibly powerful about that "You'll just have to accept it like you do your spankings," line.

I’m confident it would seem more challenging than titillating as it was happening, yet I can’t help wanting to be taken in a direction in which she decides on her own that there are certain challenging things I “just have to accept” like I do my spankings.

And, the underlying reality is that consistency and openness are both within the scope of authority I have consensually handed over to her. I've asked her to hold me accountable.  I've asked her to be diligent in doing that.  I've told her that part of me wants her to be more open about her authority.

Although being the spanker in a DD relationship undoubtedly involves real commitment in terms of time and energy, I do feel like once established, being firmly in charge must be easier than always feeling like you’re negotiating the boundaries of that part of the relationship.  The decision fatigue that comes with inconsistency seems so much harder than applying a simple “earn one – get one” approach.

And, while I genuinely don’t look forward to my bottom paying the prices for such consistency, the benefit it has for the spanker is another issue KOJ addressed:

“My wife was a very consistent spanker. For instance, I was expected home at 6 pm unless I had called ahead. I got one swat for every minute late without calling -- and she let nothing go; even if it was 6:01 I got the one swat, pants down and bent over the kitchen island, bare bottom with the bread board (and even one swat could sting!). That may seem harsh and micromanaging, but to her it was all training. For me, I appreciated the consistent enforcement of rules. There was no room for error, nor should there be. If I didn't want paddled, all I had to do was call ahead!”

That element of certainty seems to me to be the most important element of consistency, and there is, in fact, something oddly comforting about knowing that, while you’ve given up significant control to your wife, in the end if you don’t want a hard spanking, that’s mostly within your control via improving your conduct or meeting agreed-upon expectations.

Over the years I’ve had this blog, lack of consistency is unquestionably the number one complaint I’ve heard from disciplined husbands. I don’t want to make this post an exercise in airing that problem, though there probably will be a fair amount of that. What I’d really like instead though is to hear the advice of those who have achieved some level of consistency that they are satisfied, or close to satisfied with.

For those folks, what does consistency look like in terms of frequency?  Is it something you judge in relation to some limited set of agreed-upon rules?

Or is it more about her exercising more fully a broader grant of “any time, for any reason” authority?  If her authority is that unbounded, what does consistency mean for you in that context?

Where you and your wife have achieved consistency, was it about systems and specific communication tactics, like periodic check-ins, journaling, etc.?

Or, was it more about the wife adopting or developing a certain attitude, perhaps displaying the kind of enthusiasm for wielding and displaying power that KOJ’s wife got to?  Did getting to that level of commitment and enthusiasm entail the kind of openness to others knowing about or intuiting the nature of the relationship that KOJ’s wife told him he would just have to accept and that Marisa aspired to?

I hope you have a great week.

  1. There is some overlap between the 2 themes of how to restart DD after a long break, and how to maintain consistency. Because we have a weekly check in, I think it helps to restart our DD, because we are talking about it at least once a week, even if we aren't able to practice it. I keep a DD journal and read it to her during every check in, so she is well aware of what I have on my mind. This forces me to be honest with her about what I really need, which can be hard after a long break. It also helps that we have written a formal DD agreement clearly defining our roles and responsibilities. We both agree DD is necessary and good for our relationship. The check in and the formal agreement contribute to restarting DD after a break, as well as reminding her of the importance of being consistent with providing discipline. I am happy to say she doesn't let me get away with anything.

    1. I have definitely let my journalling habit slide, and restarting it is almost surely part of the formula for restarting the DD. Though, for some reason, this injury seems to have reduced both my DD and personal journalling, One would think that with more time on my hands, journalling would have increased, but it didn't work out that way.

  2. Dan said it is harder for them to restart their DD because there is no particular big problem needing to be addressed. Big problems needing to be addressed are extremely rare in our household, and she knows that her ongoing reminding me of her authority prevents big problems from happening, which is what we want. Another bonus of her reminding me of her authority is when we do need to take a break from DD, we are continuing to discuss it, and she will tease me about upcoming spankings. So, when it is time for me to again submit to her spanking me, instead of being embarrassed, I am just reminded that this is simply the way it is. Works for me.

  3. I think that the fundamental issue is that discipline as in DD,is larger in my mind than in my wife's. I think about it frequently whereas she will only think of it if there is poor behaviouir (and often DD is not her first thought in terms of consequences). I have tried over the years to be as open as possible in my journals and in conversation, focussing on the fact that spanking is a core part of my sexuality that is available to her at all times as a 'lever' to get the relationship that she wants. Slowly the message is getting home but it ebbs and flows.

In terms of breaks from DD, our rountine is normally a check-in evvery 7 - 10 days and to be fair, few are the times when that check-in has not resulted in a spanking which can vary in severity depnding o behaviour. When we have had a longer break fro external reasons or family issues, I have eventually journalled to that effect and to suggest that maybe it was time to return to 'normality'. The first session after a break (and we have probably had 2 -3 breaks of longer than a month) can be initially a bit awkward, a bit less natural but she (and I ) almost immediatley get back into the routine, aided by journalling and discussions.

We are coming up to about 4 weeks since our last session (holidays, visitors, etc) so my journalling is hinting at a necessary return of the weekly check-in. TB

    1. Check-ins are another element we need to revisit. We did them for a while, and they kind of worked, but then Anne moved more day-to-day planning kind of stuff into them, and we'd literally spend 30 minutes doing things like exploring campsites for a trip, then 5 minutes talking about DD and behavior issues. It was distracting and the original purpose got lost. We do need to have more face-to-face, scheduled communications to plan life stuff, as tend to get bogged down in our day-to-day routines, but I think that needs to be separate from the DD check-ins. I also tend to think that if the check-ins indicate a spanking has been earned, the norm should be for it to happen right then. That wasn't really part of our check-ins when we tried them, but I think it would help with the consistency and regularity. Though, I know others have said that communication during check-ins was better if actual spankings were kept separate from them.

  4. I agree with Norton about an overlap between the two themes this week. Addressing them separately, we did pause our FLDDR lifestyle for an extensive period several years ago when I experienced medical issues. In order to 'get back into gear' she waited until she knew I was physically able to accept a spanking and also issued a notification/warning. She stressed the impact of our long layover and my need to be spanked regularly. Even though I had not committed an offense, my first spanking would be much like a punishment. I was to receive a long and hard spanking and regular sessions for maintenance would be back on tract.

Addressing the consistency factor, I completely understand those with family, friend and vanilla life occurrences and the effect they have on maintaining a FLR lifestyle. Fortunately, that has little effect for us. We have a maintenance program and one of the 3 goals is to act as a 'catch all' for minor infractions which may not have warranted a discipline spanking at the time. Family contact is limited due to vast distances and some of our friends know of our lifestyle and accept it. Many friends are also in a similar lifestyle with FLR's of their own. No need to hide a discipline session and at times, they add to the punishment especially if the offense involves them in any way.

    1. "Many friends are also in a similar lifestyle with FLR's of their own."

SC, could you talk a little bit more about how that developed? Although I've made a few friendships that I consider "real" through this blog, the reality is (a) they are all mostly electronic; and (b) all are long-distance. I find as time goes by, I'm increasingly into the "club" aspect of the DWC and part of me really craves having more the DD aspects of my life overlap more with the friendship and social aspects. Yet, spanking that is unconnected to accountability does nothing for me, so the idea of attending a big spanking party leaves me cold.

  5. The Wicked Queen has a very good post on consistency r.e. F/M DD. It is written from the perspective of the disciplinary wife, and goes into the psychology of why consistency is so important in a DD relationship. It explains why her husband feels more secure, knowing she will follow through with a real spanking every time he has done something to deserve one. This information will be extremely helpful to share with your wife if consistency is lacking. She also has a very good essay on why a wife should consider spanking her husband.

  6. Your comment "something oddly comforting about knowing that, while you’ve given up significant control to your wife, in the end if you don’t want a hard spanking, that’s mostly within your control via improving your conduct or meeting agreed-upon expectations." resonated with me. I've said that I'm sure that I started down this path after living in a strict boarding school with the possibility of physical discipline hanging over our heads 24/7, and in that environment I always tried to avoid it by being a good boy.
Now under our construct I still try to be a good boy and so we add multiple new rules which don't result in punishment because I obey them. However, we have reached a delightful stage where my wife is finally deciding what is punishable independently. She then teases me about it and it will be dealt with.
An example, I have always ridden her about making sure that her car is locked in the driveway because she frequently did not. Last night I left her keys in her unlocked car all night... she took a lot of pleasure in telling me this morning that I would be spanked for it.

    1. I had a similar "carelessness" issue recently, in which I left the key to my motorcycle in the ignition switch, apparently for several months since I've been laid up and hadn't ridden that bike for months. Now, it was in our garage, which is closed and locked most of the time but, while we live in a great neighborhood, there have been waves of garage thefts, where very bold thieves would take expensive bikes and other items when the owners were mowing the yard or doing other chores with the garage doors open. Does that fall within the kind of "carelessness" I've asked her to address? For sure.

I've told my story here numerous times over the years. We transitioned to the DWC lifestyle almost 25 years ago, and have been fairly consistent with it through those years. The consistency is largely due to our weekly maintenance spanking regimen - which has has been largely consistent, if not perfect. My wife enjoys spanking just for the joy of spanking so most weeks she does put me over her lap at least once. Minor infractions are often included in the weekly spanking - along the lines of a check-in - although she keeps good notes in her head of where I've strayed over the last week. There are also occasional attitude adjustment spankings midweek as well if needed - similar to maintenance spankings. Maintenance spankings are real spankings - typically a hundred or more whacks that leave me with a well reddened, sore behind and often a few tears in my eyes - but punishment spankings are significantly more severe. I do make an earnest effort to avoid these - but it still seems there are one or two of those a month on average.

The commitment to weekly maintenance spanking has undoubtedly been the key to our consistency, maintaining the spanking habit and the aura of maternal-style discipline in our marriage. However, I do understand that idea doesn't work philosophically for everyone - as many need a more direct correlation between offense and punishment. I do see a weekly check-in perhaps working for those who lean in that direction - and it still serves the purpose of maintaining the spanking habit. I would imagine that most of us would earn some level of spanking at a weekly check-in.

With either weekly maintenance or check-ins, both partners need to be fully bought into the DWC concept - or it is likely to become inconsistent or fizzle out altogether. I will confess that through the years - and at any given time - I might not be "fully into DD" - often because I'm really involved in other hobbies or interests - which have my primary attention.
I do almost always make it a point to read this blog weekly - whether I post or not - even when I'm not "feeling it". Not surprisingly, just doing that often brings DD back to the front of mind. At other times, I'm "really into it" - reading stories, checking out videos, etc. Still , the weekly commitment to maintenance spankings is a good way to stay grounded in those "off times".

    1. Thanks Al. For me, my issue with maintenance isn't really philosophical, though in the past it probably was. For me, it's more that the need for accountability is so core to my attraction to DD that, when it is removed, the spanking dynamic lacks all appeal. You've actually done a wonderful job over the years of convincing me that maintenance spankings do have a lot of benefits, especially keeping the whole DD dynamic "top of mind".

I get what you mean about times that you're "not feeling it". There have even been times that I've been so unmotivated by DD that I've wondered whether I've outgrown it. But, I've learned over time that it's cyclical and the interest level almost always comes roaring back at some point. I also find that around the time that I start thinking I don't need it, I invariably do something demonstrates I very much do still need/want the guardrails that DD provides.

  8. Many people find consistency to be difficult particularly with all the other time demands in one's life. That is one very good reason for weekly (or whatever interval works) maintenance or "reset" spankings. Even that schedule is often hard to keep; hence, the idea of reset.

I would also note that for us at least, stress relief spankings do occur. It sounds to me that you are quite often stressed about both the frequency and intensity of your spankings. I'll bet that if you discussed that with your wife, she may be willing to help. There is absolutely no reason to continue to be stressed about something that could be resolved. And if you need a reason for every spanking to have a disciplinary function, then you could certainly find something where you deserved a good spanking but didn't get one, unless you are perfectly behaved which we know isn't true.

Just a couple of thoughts intended to help. Graham

  9. Nice thoughts, Graham. I like what you said about there being no reason to be stressed about something that could be resolved. If my wife decided I needed a spanking, that would be all the reason I needed. Of course my situation is different than Dan's, and it sounds like his spankings are much more severe than mine. Stress relief is a probably the most important reason I shouldn't go very long without a spanking, so I am grateful to her for taking care of me before I start getting anxious.
