“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.” — Abraham Maslow
Hello all. Welcome back to The Disciplinary Wives Club – Tribute blog. Our weekly on-line gathering of women and men who are in, or would like to be in, a Domestic Discipline relationship of the type advocated by the former Disciplinary Wives Club (archived copy in the “Links I Like” list, below right).
I hope you all had a good week. Mine was another challenging one, and I’m running out of summer faster than I’m able to get past this physical setback. But, it is what it is, I guess.
A couple of weeks ago, I tried out using a captioned spanking meme as a launching pad for a discussion about strictness. It led to a good discussion about how we each define the level of strictness we want, or think we want.
One of the threads suggested an extension of the topic. It began with a comment from Al about the effect of certain comments from his wife:
Comments whose purpose is to belittle or humiliate are a turnoff for me - and thankfully Susan doesn't find them tasteful either. On the other hand - comments that empower Susan's authority to spank at will are very much a turn on - such as Dan's example of "Are we clear?" Just a few days ago, Susan and I were having a minor difference of opinion, and I asked her why her idea was any better than mine. Her reply - "because I'm the one with the paddle". And, I just said "yes ma'am" and let it go. :)
That last part caused some concerns for T.:
I think I would have a bit of a problem if my wife and I had a difference of opinion on something, and she stated I’m the one with the paddle. I guess of course it depends on the circumstances.
Al responded:
Just to clarify, her comment was actually said in jest - as the issue at hand was of minor importance. Although - it does reflect her comfort level as a disciplinary wife - but we've been a DWC couple since 2001, so probably not unexpected.
Which led Norton to observe:
"Because I am the one with the paddle" is basically the same topic T and Dan were describing above, as they both had trouble accepting spankings they perceived as unfair or for trivial reasons. In our house, is if she feels motivated to spank for any reason, I have no desire to challenge her, and want her to be dominant. Ms. Terrapin said a while ago, when she realized that she didn't need to be fair, it freed her up to stop second guessing herself. Basically, she assumes the role of a strict mom, and she could stay out late every night if she wanted to, but that didn't mean he could. Of course, you would have to really trust her, and if she really was unfair or selfish, you would probably soon resent it. A future topic could be "what is more important to you in your relationship with your dominant wife - fairness or dominance? That may be an oversimplified question, but it might generate some discussion.
So, let’s do that as topic.
Of course, as a preliminary matter, I’m guessing some may say the term “dominant wife” doesn't apply to them, as their wife is not, in fact, dominant. And, the fact that they may do so demonstrates just how separable DD is from FLR and Dominance/submission lifestyles. Note that I didn’t say it’s “separate” from those relationship styles, as there clearly are overlaps for many of us in practice. But, the fact that some will say they are in a DD relationship but that their wife is not “dominant” shows that the act of discipline may be separate from decision-making power, even when it comes to what is spankable.
I admit, I don’t spend much time thinking about “fairness” in our DD relationship. But, admittedly, that may be because my wife is someone who does care about fairness and, in the context of DD, probably thinks about it more than I do.
And, even though I don’t concern myself that much about fairness, I don’t think I am on the same side of the line as Norton, based on the almost total discretion he is comfortable giving to his wife. For me, when I say we have an “anytime, anywhere, for any reason” approach to DD, implicit in that is that I know Anne is not the kind of person who acts arbitrarily or might get drunk on her own power. She’s just not.
So, I don’t spend much time thinking about fairness because, in the context of our relationship, I don’t have to. But, focusing more on Norton’s specific question, our “anytime, anywhere, for any reason” approach probably answers that question by erring on the side of dominance, though I think of it more as “authority” (though that’s undoubtedly just semantics). Psychologically, I know that I get huge benefits from having someone impose rules and guardrails, and for that to feel real, it can’t be subject to debates about “fairness” or proportionality. I need to feel that her authority is pretty close to unlimited and, just as importantly, I need her to feel that way.
Again, that’s not to say there are not limits or that fairness isn’t a consideration. If her decisions to spank were arbitrary, I would have a problem with that. But, for me, there is a difference between "arbitrary", on the one hand, and her declaring something is spankable and me thinking it shouldn't be, on the other. She has a reason, and it may be as one-sided as, "Because that thing you keep doing annoys me," but that doesn't make it arbitrary.
Similarly, a spanking that was literally for no reason would be a big problem for me, though in part that is because Anne is so binary in her approach, with every spanking being at true punishment levels.
"Proportionality", in terms of the severity of the spanking matching the severity of the offense might be another aspect of "fairness", but I think its a potentially problematic one in the context of Domestic Discipline, which is between fully-grown adults. It's tempting to say that a minor offense should get a moderate spanking, but the reality is, we are fully-grown men, and for a spanking to be disciplinary, it probably needs to be quite hard.
It's also the case that many men who ask for these relationships have at attraction to spanking and, therefore, in order to overcome that attraction, it has to be hard. Period.
I also think there is a distinction between "looking for a reason" and there not being any reason. Right now, thanks to our extended hiatus, I think Anne is very much looking for reasons to spank and wishing she could. But, taking advantage of some conveniently-timed misbehavior as an excuse to spank is not the same thing as not having a reason.
In any event, whatever concerns I might have about fairness are outweighed by the practical, psychological, and, yes, erotic benefits I get from her being in charge. So, for me, the answer to Norton's question is that having her in an authoritative, dominant role is more important than abstract concerns about "fairness".
It’s also interesting (to me at least), that the concept of “fairness” is almost completely absent from most of the Disciplinary Wives Club website materials and guidebooks. I ran a quick search on the two main relationship guidebooks, and the terms “fair” and “fairness” don’t appear anywhere in the texts. I probably shouldn’t be surprised, given Aunt Kay’s emphasis on the unbounded nature of the wife’s authority:
The definition of a DWC relationship is that the woman's role involves providing moral and behavioral guidance to the man and he invests her with the absolute authority to decide upon and wield punishments accordingly. The man's role is to accept this authority and strive to gain benefit from it.
So, were Aunt Kay and the DWC founders cavalier or dismissive about notions of fairness? I don’t think so. Just like I don’t think much about fairness because I know Anne does, the DWC seems to implicitly assume the wives’ decisions are grounded in wanting to do the right thing. One of the guides makes it explicit, observing:
“Women come from a feminine place of intrinsic wisdom and nurturance. In fact, we do “know what’s good for men” more often than not.”
The wives’ authority was also grounded in the domestic nature of the relationship itself:
“Love comes first. Only with a loving relationship can you have loving discipline. Discipline should be administered because it will benefit both parties.”
So, I think Aunt Kay didn’t talk much about “fairness”, because she felt it was already inherent in the maternal discipline mode the DWC promoted.
However, note that whatever the DWC founders might have thought about fairness, they would have agreed with Mrs. Terrapin as quoted by Norton that it doesn’t mean the parties are subject to the same rules. One of the guidebooks noted:
“There is an implied "child/authority figure element to the DWC Lifestyle. If a kid gets a discipline spanking from Mom or Auntie, they don't get to say, "Well O.K. but you smoke and drive too fast, so you have to get a spanking too". They just have to accept it, like it or not.”
How about you? How would you answer Norton’s question as which is more important to you, dominance/authority or fairness?
Finally, I came across this picture the other day. It seemed to me to perfectly encapsulate how some of us are innately fascinated by female authority, and for some of you it happened at a formative age.
Have a great week.

I think I look at fairness and a difference of an opinion in a different light. If my wife says a spanking is warranted I trust her and accept that I deserve a spanking. There is a difference between arguing and communicating. I have a bad habit of arguing first often raising my voice to get my opinion across instead of listening to her and calmly asking questions or discussing everything in a respectful way. I just got paddled for this very thing. My bad habit happened to occur three days in a row and her patience ran out. 30 minutes standing in the corner thinking about it followed by a spanking before bed. Even if my opinion was correct and a spanking would seem unfair i asked her to hold me accountable to live up to her expectations for my behavior. So if she perceives that my behavior is unbecoming her husband and needs to be corrected I trust her. Yes it is painful and to be honest I should have been spanked everytime but in her sense of fairness she was scolding me in the corner instead of spanking me giving me evey chance to learn how to communicate with her until she felt a more drastic consequence was necessary. So im writing this in bed with a very sore behind a very sorry husband
ReplyDeleteTo me, there is a huge distinction between the content of an argument and the way it is conducted. To me, the former should almost never be spankable in a healthy relationship, but the opposite is true when it comes to the way you behave during an argument. It does sound like your wife handled the fairness thing perfectly, as she gave you corner time, so the problem wasn't simply ignored. Then, when that didn't work, she escalated to the spanking.
DeleteAnother question about arguing when does it become manipulative? While talking about how stressful things have been lately she pointed out that my trying to manipulate her to do something my way without giving a good reason is a big part of her stress. She calls it bullying in other words I am stating what I want in an aggressive way to get what I want without a good reason. We are taking a trip and I want to cut it short and come back early. This morning she made it very clear that we will come back when she decides and I better not bring it up again. Im sure there's a punishment coming because we've talked about this multiple times. I may not be sitting tomorrow or anytime soon but that's completely up to her.
DeleteDominance and authority far exceed my need for fairness. We (me and my wife) do TTWD specifically because I requested it, and it helps me with a significant issue that negatively affects my life when I lose control of it. The fact that my wife does this has improved my behavior and mindset immensely. To be effective the spanking has to be real, painful, and lasting to force me to think before I act every time I am faced with a challenging situation. If she only punishes me for the reasons I have created, then the control isn't real, or I may back out at any time because I have set all the parameters. So I actually look forward to the unfair punishments; the things she feels are important that I don't. It means she has taken ownership of the relationship, is taking control of the disciplinary decisions, and is using the situation to her benefit as well as mine. Other than when the punishment has been announced or when it is happening, I find her confidence and strength irresistible, and feel a trust and comfort that many 'normal' couples never experience. This doesn't happen if the wife is only making rules that fit my definition of fair. - Will
ReplyDeleteHi Will. Thanks for joining in. This all really resonates with me. I can't say I "look forward to" "unfair" punishments, but I agree that her imposing consequences for things she thinks are important, whether I agree or not, shows she has taken ownership of the relationship, especially the DD aspects. Although I don't like it while it is happening, I totally agree that her exercising that kind of discretionary power makes her "confidence and strength irresistible".
DeleteHa! "Look forward to" is probably a little strong. I guess it is more like going to work on Monday morning. I hate doing it, but there is security in knowing I have a job and an income. - Will
DeleteGood analogy!
DeleteFirst off, I love the pic at the end. It reminds me of my youth, and the many strict religious teachers I had. I think the paragraph above sums up a positive DD or FlR relationship. “Love comes first”
ReplyDelete“Only with a loving relationship, can you have loving discipline”. That one paragraph sums up all of our relationships. I don’t believe anyone is on this site, who’s wife doesn’t love them and just wants to beat them. My wife has never thrashed me unfairly.
I’ve asked her to be more strict. My wife has slowly gained more authority and dominance over me in little ways. She once said, I don’t take out the trash, that’s your job as a man. We were driving the other day and she stated, you have a nasty habit of rolling through stop signs. She is correct by the way. If there is no one coming, I roll through them. She responded, I should thrash you for it and you won’t roll through them. My usual smug response would be of been whatever and change the subject. This time, I agreed. I said you’re correct, I could hurt someone and I deserve to be punished. When we got home, she strapped the hell out of me. I went out to get some odds and ends after and actually stopped at the stop sign. My bottom was throbbing. We were lying in bed and I brought up the topic of a weekly maintenance spanking. It was something I was initially against and she was all for it. She then stated, are you sure this is what you want. Because if it’s scheduled, it’s going to happen, whether you are tired or not. No excuses, I’m going to whip your bottom. We talk about our youth more than we ever have and discipline. I told my wife looking back, there is not one spanking I received that was unfair. I deserved all of them. So with regards to fairness, a once a week punishment will probably resolve all of the screw up’s for the week that were missed. It’s fair to me. Finally, I agree with Dan and all of my punishments have to be severe. My wife does not give a moderate thrashing. It’s usually full force with the strap or paddle. She has said to me during a punishment, have you had enough”. Of course my response is yes. At times she stops and others she continues on. For me, I need to be sore for days, I’m more aware of what I’ve done wrong when sitting on a tender backside.
T
I had a feeling you in particular would like that pic. :-)
DeleteYou and I have expressed similar reservations about maintenance spankings in the past, so it's interesting we both are reconsidering it now. Though, you very frequently relate stories about recent spankings, so it seems like are getting them close to weekly as it is.
Anne doesn't ask me whether I've had enough, but she does sometimes ask, "Have you learned your lesson?" or something like that. When I inevitably say yes, I know that it's almost always a prelude to her saying, "Let's give you a few more just to make sure."
I believe in the Aunt Kay method that Cindy decides when my behavior is unacceptable, thus a spanking is needed, and follows through by spanking me. She decides, and although I may think that it is not a spank worthy issue, she has decided it is. Thus, I am spanked. Immediate spankings for raising my voice (that is shouting) has helped calm me when upset and I am really really working on it.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how we have almost no disagreements, once she can spank when needed.
DD works for us, but it is not FLR. We decide things together, doing things we both like doing.
Red
Raising one's voice during arguments seems like a very common issue among our little group.
DeleteIn our 24/7 FLR with DD household, her authority is unquestioned. After I retired, and entered my first 24/7 FLR, it was what I wanted. Leaving my high stress, team leader career, I did not want to make decisions and wanted her to take the lead in our relationship. This concept carried over into my second and current FLR. When she and she alone determines I have earned a punishment spanking, there is no debate or questioning her decision. I am to accept her punishment without question. She determines the need, place, position, implement(s), duration and force. In our 20-year plus existence, I have had less than a handful of punishment spankings I felt were unjust or not needed. I must also say to her credit, she has never become drunk with her power or authority. Aside from a few times I feel she has been extremely fair in determining when a punishment is due. FLR and DD living has been great for me, my behavior has improved as well as my language and generally the way I live. Hard and effective punishments spankings and our maintenance program have worked well for us.
ReplyDelete"Leaving my high stress, team leader career, I did not want to make decisions and wanted her to take the lead in our relationship." For me, that counterbalance was one of the things I wanted to get out of DD when I was still in my career. I was always so stressed out from being in charge at work that it seemed to make sense to give up control at home. It did help, though work remained overwhelming in one way or another until the day I walked out the door. My wife used that counterbalancing as an explanation for our relationship dynamics the one time that one of our kids asked about the fact that my wife seemed to be making more and more decisions without consulting me.
DeleteThe prospect of someone becoming drunk with power is a real thing, and it's one reason I would never recommend one of these power shifting relationships to any couple who haven't been together for a while. One of the places I worked for decided to run a little experience, in which they gave each of three people who were contenders for a senior leadership position a multi-week "trial run." It was fascinating, as one of them who had always been hyper-controlled and together completely changed when given even temporary full control of the group. She was someone I considered a friend, and it was fascinating how much she changed over that short period.
I’ve seen so many promotions where the person becomes drunk with power and looks the fool. In my profession, they are seen as we have to respect their position, but we laugh because they look like an ass. They are not
DeleteRespected and for that matter and I found my little niche where I’m left alone.
T
The place I was working at that time was a very large company, but it also was the most egalitarian place I've ever worked. Even very senior leaders acted like regular people. So, for someone to go on a power trip was way out of line with company culture. In that case, everyone said the promotion was that person's to lose. And, man, did she ever lose it.
DeleteDan, thanks for choosing the topic I suggested. It doesn't sound like anybody is saying that they put fairness ahead of dominance. That makes prefect sense, for all the good reasons described above. Also, Will made some good points, one being something you agreed with, which was a spanking needs to be real and hard in order to be effective. While, I might not look forward to being spanked for things I don't agree with, or care about, but I do get what he means, and would like her to her exert her authority more often than she does. She really doesn't have a naturally dominant personality, so it's a stretch for her. As I said, we no longer do mantenance spankings, but she now spanks more often for small things. The severity varies quite a bit, depending on her mood. I desire more strictness and harder, longer, spankings, but unlike Anne, she doesn't look forward to spanking me, and doesn't really think much about DD at all.
ReplyDelete"She really doesn't have a naturally dominant personality, so it's a stretch for her."
DeleteSomething I've started to appreciate more over the last couple of years is it may be a mistake to say that our partner "is" this or "isn't" that. When we first started DD, Anne did not have a naturally dominant personality either, and one of the goals of DD was trying to make her more forceful (and me less so). For many years, I would have said that DD did equalize the power and gave her an outlet for frustration, but it didn't really make her dominant. Now I would say that, while I don't think she has what I would call a "dominant personality", she has come to like being dominant, i.e. being in charge. She likes setting rules. She likes seeing her will carried out. She likes having the power to spank when I go agains those. Those are all HUGE changes from where we started 20 years ago.
Hi Dan,
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else, I would say that dominance/authority are more important than fairness. But that is also a direct result of fairness being so important to my wife. I truly hate unfairness in almost any context, and if my wife were truly unfair, I am sure I would go to great lengths to try to whine about it, but quite frankly, she is so hard-wired for fairness that I don't even need to think about it. Also, I agree fully with the implicit unfairness in a DD/FLR relationship, so if I were to tell my wife she was being unfair for something related to DD, all she would have to do is say "I know I am," and I would be ok with it, since I have asked for an "unfair" asymmetrical relationship dynamic.
The one area I might differ from you is in this statement: "... a spanking that was literally for no reason would be a big problem for me..." Live most here, I certainly want and even need spankings to be for real reasons. I also want the whole dynamic to be similar to a parent/child dynamic (maternal), and I can't imagine a good parent choosing to spank their child simply because they could or because they felt like it. However, while our dynamic may feel maternal, ultimately it is not; we are partners, the relationship is consensual, I am fully grown and independent, and in fact I am much bigger and stronger than my wife. Since ours is a "created" dynamic, rather than one that simply "is," I think it is totally valid for my wife to reinforce that dynamic if she feels it is necessary, even though that is not what I prefer.
-ZM
I think you're right that the maternal model, and how core it is to my feelings about DD, probably explains why I have an aversion to the thought of totally arbitrary or "because I feel like it" spankings. Interestingly, I don't feel the same way about setting rules and, again, that may because there were plenty of times that I felt like rules set down by parents or other adults were, in fact, arbitrary, stupid, or unfair. So, I end up with the complicated set of reactions in which I'm not OK with being spanked for no reason or for a reason that is totally arbitrary, but if a rule has been set and I choose to break it, I'm OK with being spanked for that, even if I disagree with the rule itself. So, apparently, obedience to authority makes it OK for me in some sense. Now, if that authority kept just making up silly rules as an excuse to spank, I'm sure I would rebel at some point. But, some amount of arbitrariness seems OK if exercised by someone I see as an authority figure. So, again, very parental.
DeleteDan,
DeleteI grew up with so many rules that as I got older, I found myself breaking them. I wouldn’t classify myself as self destructive, but would be out all night partying with friends and doing stupid stuff. The same time, I went to school and worked full time. My Mother never had money: I would be the one showing up to college parties with Corona. Kids were like wtf. As I got older, I yearned for the maternal lifestyle I grew up with. We talked about it benefitting my twenties.
Looking back, I should have never married my ex and made sure I found someone to hold me accountable for my actions.
Thank God, I’m successful and have a flourishing career as a leader.
T
My rule breaking did cross the line into self-destructiveness. I had a teacher who told me, in all seriousness, that I had a death wish. Because I had so few rules, I never really knew how much stress being fully in charge of myself all the time was causing. In your 20s, you knew what you were missing. I really didn't. I think that's why, when I found the DWC, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I'd never really thought until then that maybe my unlimited freedom had come at a big price, and I found the stories of wives putting their men under their thumbs incredibly compelling. It hit me so hard because it was so far outside of any anything I'd experienced.
DeleteThe authority is more important than "fairness." In our case, for most of our marriage she has been on the receiving end of unfairness at times as I called all of the shots. Now, we redistribute the asymmetry, as she can spank me whenever she decides; I have no veto. Even if something seems unfair, we are still rebalancing overall. My wife doesn't like to spank so that is a natural brake on unfairness, however, she like the results when I have a red ass. E
ReplyDeleteRebalancing was a big, big part of our reason for trying DD, though I don't think I ever "called all the shots". I had a bigger, more brash personality, but despite ending up in a ton of official and unofficial leadership roles, I've never really enjoyed calling the shots; I just end up being looked at do so because of that big personality and because I'm relatively good at it.
DeleteDan,
DeleteThis is where I think I differ compared to the rest of the group. My wife enjoys my alpha ego, she knows I will protect her and look out for her best interest. She never worries about a thing and as a matter of fact, I do way more around the household than her ex or than most men. She pointed out the reason I was attracted to you, is you had an air about you that most men do not. A confident, slightly cockiness that exuded assurance and a knowing of what you want. She saw me as leader, much like her Father.
T
For us, it was mixed. I think my wife definitely was attracted to the brashness. I've told her that the only reason she hooked up with me as I had a cool leather jacket, drove a Jeep, and worked as a bouncer in college. I'm very sure she would not have been attracted to a wimpier me, but I also think the brashness could wear thin at times.
DeleteAlong with putting her authority ahead of fairness, it seems the vast majority of us desire more strictness than we currently have. Dan, it seems like you are in a unique situation that most of us don't share, in that your wife actually looks forward to spanking you, and lets you know it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the majority of us, including me, are with women that don't think about spanking and DD nearly as much as we do, but they do enjoy the benefits.
I'm definitely not unique, as I think multiple long-term commenters have said their wives genuinely enjoy giving spankings. Both Al and Alan for example. And, Anne has always drawn a distinction between liking the exercise of control and watching me comply--basically the whole pre-spanking ritual--and not so much the spanking itself, though I suspect that has changed a bit in the last two or three years.
DeleteIt does seem to be rare that the wife thinks about it as much as the husband, though from what I see in M/f-oriented groups, I think it's not really a gender thing so much as "tops" don't seem to think about it as much as "bottoms". KDPierre even has an interesting cartoon to that effect.
My wife has told me she actually now enjoys giving me a thrashing. She now knows she cannot physically hurt me long term. A crimson bottom and a few bruises once in a while does a man well. She enjoys seeing me bend over and comply to her wishes. I also agree that I think way more about DD than my wife does. I was shocked at her statement about thrashing me for rolling through the stop sign. It was not the norm for her.
DeleteT
"She enjoys seeing me bend over and comply to her wishes." This has always been what Anne has said about her enjoyment of DD.
DeleteThings definitely can change. We had been doing this for well over 15 years before Anne started spontaneously threatening spankings, and it has been happening WAY more over the last two years.
For me, fairness always seems to be a moot point as I misbehave so often! This morning I got a message to meet her in the bedroom in 10 minutes, clearly I was hoping for the best and fearing the worst. It had been nearly two weeks since the last disciplinary session and I knew that there could be plenty of reasons for a spanking. I hate that period between 'see me in my study' and the event, as I feel controlled, powerless and yes, dominated. I reported as requested and it was clear that no fun was planned for the following twenty minutes.
ReplyDeleteUnusually, she didn't even ask me if I felt that a 'reset' was necessary, she merely listed out a few misdemeanours and then focussed on the dinner with friends late last week when I drank too much and kept the music too loud. And then tried to defend myself by arguing after they left...
But, I felt that she had been guilty of some misbehaviours during the previous week and it took a great deal of resolve to submit and stay still through quite a fierce session with the cane and strap. I did feel a degree of something akin to unfairness but I reminded myself that I had asked for this aspect of our relationship. With that in mind I stayed still throughout and made almost no noise throughout (which is not my norm).
She asked me after how I felt ( which she normally does). My answer was 'chastised', a feeling I don't normally feel quite so explicitly. My current thoughts are that whilst there may be aspects of her behaviour that I can find irritating, a key aspect of the DD process for me is to accept them as part of the overall package and to always respond with patience and respect. Much easier said than done ...
When I shared these thoughts with her she said that maybe I was finally making some progress... TB
"I did feel a degree of something akin to unfairness but I reminded myself that I had asked for this aspect of our relationship." That works for me, but I think that's in part because the feelings of a punishment being unfair have occurred so infrequently. If it was a more frequent thing, I think I would probably start having serious reservations about whether asking for this had been a mistake.
DeleteI think I get what you mean about feeling "chastised" and about it being an atypical feeling. While there are lots of words for being punished or disciplined, to me, "chastised" has this distinct connotation of a punishment being "imposed", in the sense of something we are subjected to even if we don't agree to it. The dictionary lists "to chasten" as a synonym, and that definition includes "humbling" someone. So, there's an aspect of imposing a correction in a way that reinforces the power dynamic by taking the recipient's agreement or lack thereof out of the equation.
I agree with that. If you chastise someone, it comes across to me as being humbled. I was humbled after being punished for rolling through a stop sign. We are away enjoying a much needed break from chaos. I brought it up to her after dinner last night. I did not want the punishment at the time because it was trivial to me, but it was important to her. I asked her to consistently hold me accountable for things that she feels are wrong or could impose danger. This is a slippery slope to us as she doesn’t want to lead. She also is not the nagging wife type, but if it’s dangerous or I’m out of line, I feel the need to be held accountable.
DeleteT
I came across this Chinese proverb “ "When punishment is certain and severe, there will be no punishment" which is food for thought in a DD context. It plays to the kind of consistency & absolutism that appeals to me. I think my punishments are fairly severe because I often get past the point of increased pain to a sort of bearable numbness. If it carries on past that point then it doesn’t really hurt much more at the time, but the effects last longer.
ReplyDeleteConsistency is much less black and white ; punishment is far from ‘certain’. Would real certainty & increased severity eliminate the need for punishment? I think it would certainly have an effect on improving behaviour further. TB
One of our former commenters pointed out that in the London of centuries past, public hangings were targeted by pickpockets, even though pickpocketing was a hanging offense. The lesson being that, while severity of punishment was high, the certainty of it was low. That makes a lot of sense to me.
DeleteI think that the certainty of punishment probably has a lot more effect in changing behavior than does severity. Smoking kills. We all know it. It's written on the packs. Yet many still smoke. Why? Because even though smoking certainly greatly increases the likelihood of premature death - and death is certainly a severe penalty - smoking doesn't ALWAYS cause early death, and even when it does, it is usually much later.
Delete"...I often get past the point of increased pain to a sort of bearable numbness. If it carries on past that point then it doesn’t really hurt much more at the time, but the effects last longer." - I am one who holds an unpopular view here that if one is serious about changing behavior, the sting of a spanking while being administered, no matter how painful it is, is really not all that effective of a deterrent.
The spankings I have gotten that have truly changed not only my behaviors but even my mindset have been those that have left long-lasting soreness felt for days and days. That is why when someone commented several months back (can't remember who) about them having used pain-relieving cream before a spanking and how it had dulled the pain significantly, I threw out the idea of perhaps doing that intentionally and with your wife's knowledge. My thinking was that often spankings end when my wife can see that I am struggling to take them so they hurt a lot at the time, but often it stops hurting soon after she stops spanking. If the immediate sting of the spanking was reduced, then she could spank much harder and longer, and ultimately as I am feeling my still sore bottom days and days later (and remembering the spanking and why it happened) my behavior would be more likely to be modified. The whole thinking was based on something that Michael Masterson wrote about school spanking; the punishment wasn't so much the paddling itself, but rather it was having to try to sit in class in the days that follow on a bruised bottom, and having everyone looking at you, knowing full well what had happened. Really, both of those things - long lasting effect felt for days and the humbling/humiliation of witnesses or others knowing - really resonate with me as I am thinking about serious punishments.
Or for those that are in the whole "sting" camp, where they feel that spankings should be given for maximum sting and immediate pain without a lot of bruising, there is always capsaicin cream. My wife put some of that on my bottom after a hard spanking, and then made me wear a diaper for the next hour or so. The heat of my just spanked bottom was locked up inside and it really activated the capsaicin. It felt like someone had a blowtorch on my butt, especially if I tried to sit down, and the effects lasted for several hours after.
Anyway, just several random thoughts triggered by your comments.

For me, whether the immediate stinging pain is itself a deterrent depends on the behavior, including how deeply rooted it is. I think that short and fast spankings for very small irritants might be effective. But, for more serious or deeply-rooted offenses, a longer spanking with effects that last for days definitely keeps it front of mind in a way that a shorter spanking doesn't. I used to think that spanking after the point of numbness was gratuitous, but I think it was you that pointed out that it was the swats that just keep coming after the point of numbness that will still be felt several days later. I've since found that to be very true.
DeleteHello Dan,
ReplyDeleteI was simply wondering if I could find the DWC guidebooks that you are mentioning in these articles anywhere on the web? I already know of the website, but it did seem you were referring to 'guidebooks' which sound like there could be more sources on DWC. I absolutely love that site. Hence my query.
Wonderful topic and a fantastic blog btw.
Dan,
DeleteI always wondered what was in those manual. I never did order them, at the time my then wife wanted no part of it. Is this something Tomy would allow
you to post here now that the site is defunct.
I don't think he would have a problem with it. Honestly, my big problem with distributing them has been that the DWC was a group effort, which makes copyright tricky. The text itself could be "owned" by someone else. And, there are drawings in some of the manuals, and all of them have cover art. I've never known who contributed those works. Finally, the versions I have for most of the manuals are copy protected and have the "copy and paste" function disabled. But, I'll check soe of the stuff he's sent me and see whether I have any versions that are not copy protected.
DeleteThis is along the lines of my previous (private email) inquiry of days past.
DeleteIt kind of sounds like you have the manuals in some type of digital format (PDF's?), and their stored on "copy protected" DVD's. Is that correct?
If you have any "physical" manuals (as per my original, long-term search), those could be digitally scanned and converted into stand-alone, copy-protected PDF's.
(BTW: Almost all of these manuals actually have "Aunt Kay" listed as the author. Yes, she may have been more of an "editor" for some, but the original authors/artists (if not her) certainly new where their work would be appearing, and be distributed, and went along with her being listed a "Author."
My general "feeling" is that both Aunt Kay and Jerry were very honorable people, and would not have published anything that they did not have permission ("License") to use within those specific contexts. Whoever the original authors/artists were, they contributed with the knowledge (thus permission) to use there works in that particular manner.
Proving these permissions after so many years would be very difficult, but I personally would accept Jerry's word, him being on the sport, that Aunt Kay DID have all of the original, necessary permissions ("Licenses"), even if those permissions were never expressly made in writing.)
You're the attorney. And from what you've written, you have significant IP experience. Your concerns about the manuals could also be applied to any relaunch of the original website -- most of the "Real People" and "Fiction" submissions were obviously, legally copyrighted by the original authors, and "Aunt Kay" simply held the, for lack of a better name, the "Compilation Copyright." Are we wrong to republish the manuals, but it's okay to republish the other copyrighted works that were obviously NOT written by Aunt Kay?
Just my "philosophical" perspective and the "one the ground" realities we face.
TYPO: "on the sport" --> "on the spot".

ReplyDeleteFrom a practical point of view, it’s not likely to come up. Generally speaking, I’m far more likely to think something is deserving of punishment than B is. But if it did happen that she felt that a punishment was warranted, even if I felt it was unfair or unjustified, I would have no hesitation in accepting it. So I guess I’d say authority is more important than fairness. TG
For us, it's kind of mixed. She has spanked, or threatened to, for things like not pushing my chair in when I leave the table; something that I don't see as a genuine problem. On the other hand, on things like carelessness, I'm more likely to see something as punishment-worthy
DeleteI have trouble thinking of a spanking I wouldn't want to receive on some level. But other punishments I wouldn't want at all and would see as disproportionate. For example, say she took my phone or wouldn't let me pursue a financial opportunity. I don't extend her that kind of authority over me. Thinking about those situations helps me realize how narrow is my desire for her to discipline me with spanking, and that I'm okay with it!
ReplyDeleteI get it. Although authority and accountability are the core elements for me, spanking as the primary consequence is still a necessary element. She could probably use other punishments that would be just as effective in terms of behavior modification, but I don't think it would meet the same needs for either of us.
DeleteWe have tried a few other options to spanking, but they didn't stick. One that has been helpful before a spanking is brief corner time, but she seldom thinks about ordering that any more. We have not tried other methods, such as mouth soaping or grounding, and neither of us have any desire to do so. Like MW, spanking works so well, there is no need to do anything else.
Delete" Like MW, spanking works so well, there is no need to do anything else. " At the end of the day, that is what happens to "alternative" punishments. Spanking is fast effective and it works, sometimes for a long time. Why fix something not broken?
DeleteAlan
I’ve seriously meant to comment multiple times the past few weeks and then either it gets to be late (my phone now has a bedtime before me *sigh*) or I get lost thinking about things and it gets away from me. So… indulge me for a sec. For 1, I really appreciate the idea of regular spankings taking the place of maintenance. For us, the key thing to keep me in line is remembering the dynamic, keeping it in the forefront of my brain. So… throughout the day, when I do something I shouldn’t, she instructs me to put it in the list to be spanked for the next weekday morning. This reminds me, and keeps me in line. As to the topic this week, I’d much prefer my wife to be strict. I trust her to be fair, and frankly, even if she isn’t, I mostly deserve more spankings than I’m getting. Recently, she has begun to take my phone, and spank me for things she doesn’t like but hasn’t made clear ( for example, I got a spanking for putting my shoes on the dresser to keep them away from the dog). I’d rather she round into this form than not and am proud of her transformation from a woman taught that men are in charge to take charge (although, we also mostly share big decisions and or make decisions in our lane). Finally, as a topic, there are a couple of comments on here about being spanked hard so that you aren’t turned on (takes a hard spanking to overcome urges etc). I’m not sure that’s the case for me. I am turned on by incredibly hard and strict spankings, and while in the moment, I want to escape, the tenderness of my bottom reminds me constantly of the discipline and I feel seen, protected, cared for, and very turned on :)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you are much more diligent about self-reporting than I've ever been able to get myself to be.
DeleteAlthough Anne has started spanking more for things that she simply doesn't like, she almost always warns me about it ahead of time. It's that fairness thing.
I'm definitely not turned on during a spanking, but I am turned on both before and after. It's the big contradiction I really, truly do not like getting spanked, and I do try to avoid doing things that might earn me one. Yet, the entire dynamic turns me on, to the point I've thought about it pretty much daily since I discovered the DWC over 20 years ago.
Dan, I can totally relate to what you are saying about the contradiction of thinking about it, and in my case, obsessing about it, craving it, and yet, simultaneously, trying to avoid it. (possible future post topic?) It really is pretty hard for an outsider to understand this dynamic. Another conundrum is why I think about DD and spanking as much as I do. It certainly takes up far more mental real estate than just plain sex. Do you other guys have that same experience?
DeleteNorton,
DeleteI struggle with a deep contradiction: I hate the act of spanking itself, but I often find myself obsessively thinking about it while simultaneously trying to avoid it happening. This avoidant behavior has only increased as I’ve gotten older and as she has become more skilled at delivering a spanking.
Part of the explanation for my feelings may be the strong attraction I have to a woman taking charge and expressing her authority, especially in a sexually charged context. However, I don't think this fully explains the paradox I experience. Getting spanked might help purge some unconscious guilt, but that connection is less clear to me. I have a strong anti-authoritarian stance and am generally skeptical of authority in all its forms. This may mask a deeper need, or even create a need, to submit to my wife's authority in a safe and loving environment.
The good news to all this is that once spanking is established in a loving, trusting relationship, it can fulfill some deep needs as well as provide an often needed check on a husband's behavior -and a tool a wife can use to increase her happiness and strengthen the relationship.
Alan
Alan, it's easy for me to relate to everything you said above, except the part about hating the experience of spanking itself. While it is painful, it just seems to be part of a ritual that we do, and I need. I don't know about "unconscious guilt", but I certainly don't feel any conscious guilt. Like you, I also have a strong anti-authoritarian stance, which I think of as something to be proud of. She obeys rules, and is probably usually thought of as a nicer person than I am. Being forced to submit to her authority is the major turn on for me, and the spankings are the necessary iceing on the cake.
DeleteForgetting to push my chair in several times a week has been the reason for the vast majority of my spankings. Most of them have been what she calls, reminder spankings, which tend to be shorter than spankings for more serious offenses, and have more pauses, where she lectures between the swats. I suggested to her that she may want to consider Ms. Terrapin's approach, which is to view each and every offense or rule broken as disrespecting her authority, resulting in her spanking her husband with the same intensity for all offenses, large or small. She took my advice and delivered more of a non stop paddling than I have experienced in quite a while. It appears that this approach is working well so far, as I haven't forgotten to push in my chair since then.
DeleteWhat Alan said… every last letter!
DeleteFor me it is both hating the painful spanking itself and perhaps just as much or more than that, the whole being chastised/humbled, and yet I obsessively think about both.

Alan said: "This avoidant behavior has only increased as I’ve gotten older and as she has become more skilled at delivering a spanking." Same here. And, yet, my level of interest in the DD lifestyle has diminished only a little, if at all. I still think about DD-level spankings almost daily. When Anne and I discuss frequency, I've told her I feel like I probably need/deserve something close to weekly (though, even pre-injury we were nowhere close to that), yet I also genuinely try to avoid getting/deserving them. It is, as Alan said, a paradox, and I too struggle to explain what it's psychologically rooted in.
DeleteAgreed on the spanking thing. I wish I could fast forward to the aftercare every time and this is also true this morning as I wait to get all the kids out the door for school.
ReplyDeleteI find it easy to balance the Fairness/Authority axis. I trust Mrs GL to be fair because we are in a long lasting relationship and that is a building block that is part of sustaining it. I need and accept the authority and associated discipline and can't see a situation where if she says "upstairs now" I'll push back. Cheers GLM.
